Shoshazan Engyoji Temple

A temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, the Engyoji was founded over 1000 years ago. The Engyoji comprises many buildings designated as important cultural properties at the national or prefectural level.

Ryoanji Temple (World Heritage Site)

This famous Zen temple was founded in 1450.  The garden in front of the Hojo Hall is a stone karesansui garden. It contains fifteen natural stones arranged on white gravel.  There is not a single tree or blade of grass.

Chionin Temple (World Heritage Site)

The Chionin Temple was founded by the priest Honen in 1175 as the head temple of the Jodo Sect of Buddhism.  Under the protection of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, the Chionin became the magnificent temple you see today.

Hieizan Enryakuji Temple (World Heritage Site)

The Enryakuji Temple, on Mount Hiei was built in 788 by the priest Saicho, founder of the Tendai sect.  The extensive temple precincts comprise ten national treasures and over fifty important cultural properties.

Mt. Hiei is between Kyoto and Biwa-ko (Lake Biwa).
The mountain is dotted with shrines and temples closely related to the Hiyoshi-taisha shrine and the Enryaku-ji temple.

To get to Mt. Hiei, you can board the cable car from Oh-tsu Sakamoto.It takes 17 minutes from Kyoto to Oh-tsu Hiei-zan Sakamoto station by JR.

Eiheiji Temple

This is the head temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism.  The Zen priest Dogen began construction in 1244.  The Eiheiji has become famous as a Zen training center ever since it received a tablet from the Emperor appointing it the gFirst Soto Centerh during the Muromachi Period.

The nearest station is Eihei-ji-guchi of the Echizen-railway. It takes 2 hours and 34 minutes from Kyoto.
